At and to, part 1

Too often I hear errors with at and to when talking with Bogotanos.  We’re going to  try to help fix these errors with this first post on prepositions at and to. We’ll break it down from the easy to the hard.

EASY DIFFICULTY

We are meeting at the transmillenium station.

We are meeting at the transmillenium station.

The preposition at is used to show a specific position or direction. To is used to show movement.

  • I met her at the transmillenium station. (Position, a specific place)
  • She was at her parents’ house.  (Position, a specific place)
  • We are going to the transmillenium station. (Movement in the direction of the tranmuylleno station)
  • I am going to Medellín to see him. (Movement in the direction of Medellín)

MEDIUM DIFFICULTY

At can be used with some common verbs related to our hands and eyes. Examples are: look, smile, wink, stare, wave, frown, point etc. We use at because the the perception is directed at a position.

  • The girl smiled at me. (She directs her smile at me)
  • Why are you looking at her like that? (You direct your look at her)
  • She waved at me. (She directed her wave at me)
When I arrived at the cafe, Juan Valdez smiled at me!

At is also used after action verbs like shoot, laugh, throw, arrive, excel, succeed,  and shout to indicate the direction of the action.

  • The girl laughed at the clown. (The girl directs her laugh at the clown.)
  • Don’t throw stones at the cat. (Do not direct your throw at the cat)
  • Why are you shouting at me? (Why are you shouting toward me?)

on + day of the week: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday etc. e.g. on Thursday.

on + particular part of a day: Friday morning, Saturday afternoon. e.g. on Sunday evening.

on + particular date: July 25, 2001, January 4. e.g. on 19th of March.

N.B. On the nineteenth of March is how this date is read aloud or said in conversation.

on + calendar festival day: Christmas Day, Palm Sunday. e.g. on Easter Sunday.

I saw  Sofia Vergara on Sunday.On Monday morning, I am tired.

Colombia celebrates independence day on July 20th.

Time

Cinderella sabía los idiomas ingles y raton, y tu?

at + hour of the day: 1, 2, 3, 12, 14, etc. at 4.

N.B. 13-24 hours are only used by government and military in English speaking world

at + particular time of the day: 1:01, 2:10, 3:15, 12:30, 14:45, etc. at 4:24.

at + particular moment of the day: breakfast, lunch, dinner, sunset, sunrise, noon, etc. e.g. at midnight

At 3, I go to class.

I will meet you at 5:15.

at + hora del día: 1, 2, 3, 12, 14, etc. at 4.

N.B. 13-24 horas solo están usados por el gobiero y el ejercito en el mundo de anglohablantes

at + una hora particular del día: 1:01, 2:10, 3:15, 12:30, 14:45, etc. at 4:24.

at + un momento particular del día: breakfast, lunch, dinner, sunset, sunrise, noon, etc. e.g. at midnight

Notaste que la posicion de la frase de hora o de fecha se movió?  Sí, puedes colocar la frase al inicio o al final de tu clausula.
